Ethics and Discipline

Ethics is an essential part of Lactation Consultant Practice. Ethical awareness and values are just as important to an IBCLC as skills and a belief in breastfeeding. Ethical practice, in its broadest sense, is also essential for the reputation of our profession. Public trust and the trust of other Health Care Providers must be earned. However skilled IBCLCs are in lactation management, it will not be enough unless ethical behaviour is integral to their practice. All IBCLCs must practice within the IBLCE’s Code of Professional Conduct. It protects mothers and babies from unethical behaviour and guides IBCLCs on how to behave ethically.

IBLCE has an Ethics and Discipline Committee which makes determinations about ethical issues. It consists of:

  • Committee Chair
  • IBLCE Board Members
  • IBLCE's lawyer

The committee’s deliberations are confidential and follow strict legal procedures. They report to the IBLCE Board. When an IBCLC is found to have violated one of the tenets of the Code of Professional Conduct, sanctions can range from a private reprimand to permanent revocation of certification.
