Exam Eligibility Changes from the 2012 exam

IBLCE has revised the exam eligibility criteria for first time exam candidates. The revision reflects the committement by the IBLCE Board of Directors to enhance the quality of the IBCLC credential. For all the details click here.

Exam Changes in 2010

Historically, the IBLCE certification exam has consisted of 200 multiple-choice items of which 75 were based on images. For the 2010 exam, the total number of exam items has been reduced to 175 multiple choice items. However, the number of image-based items has been increased from 75 to 100.

There are three reasons for these changes. First, IBLCE has determined that the exam could be reduced by 10-15% with no loss of validity, reliability, or rigor. The result is a more efficient, less fatiguing exam. Second, since image-based items are usually more clinical than text-only items, the exam will become more clinical. Third, since image-based items are usually shorter than text-based items, they are less dependent on language, and therefore translate into multiple languages more readily.

As the restructured exam will consist of fewer text-only items and fewer items overall, the amount of time given to take the exam will be shortened proportionately, from six hours to five hours. Although these modifications shorten the exam administration time, the scope of knowledge being tested will remain the same, as will the relative knowledge emphasis.

Older Policies
CERPs Provider Irregularities Policy

Under a new Board policy, CERPs Provider approvals may now be delayed for program providers who have unresolved matters from previous CERPs Provider applications. These might include: post-program materials incomplete (e.g. attendance lists not submitted); irregularities in attendance rosters or issuing attendance certificates; making a false statement about CERPs approval, including number or type of CERPs; or continuing to issue CERPs when approval has expired.  In serious or repeat cases, the right for an organisation or individual to have programs approved for CERPs may be suspended or withdrawn.

The IBLCE Board has also resolved the following:

» A person who has had his or her certification suspended or revoked by the IBLCE Ethics and Discipline Committee will not be entitled to be a CERPs Provider during the period of suspension or revocation.
» CERPs will not be awarded for sessions presented or organised by a person who has had his or her certification suspended or revoked by the IBLCE Ethics and Discipline Committee for the period of suspension or revocation.
